The most similar city identifies, for the observed period of recent weather, where in the United States the 30-year normal maximum and minimum temperature are most similar.

The most similar city is calculated using a Euclidean distance formula based on maximum and minimum temperatures.
Temperatures for the selected station (S) are compared to climate normals (N) for different cities across the country.
(Max Temp, Min Temp) values are based on 1991-2020 normals data for this station, averaged over each period.
The Euclidean distance formula is calculated for the period as follows:

√(AVG(maxtemp_O) - AVG(maxtemp_N))² + (AVG(mintemp_O) - AVG(mintemp_N))²

The city with the smallest value is the 'Most similar city'
Note: Only certain cities will be returned

Explanation of "Similar Days Of Year" (Seasonal Perspective):
The most similar day of year (DOY) identifies, for the observed period of recent weather, the day(s) during the calendar year in
which the 30-year normal temperatures are most similar.

Using the 1981-2010 normals data for the station listed above, the seasonal perspective is generated by averaging normal values for the selected period (e.g. past two days, past week, etc.) across the entire year.
The observed value is compared to each normal period, finding the three days with the smallest difference in the values.
From these 3 most similar days, the date closest to the observed date is chosen.

For example, the observed high temperature October 10 was 80 degrees, the routine identifies the three days during the year with the closest normal high temperatures values: Sept 25. May 1, and May 2. The routine will choose September 25th as the most similar day of the year (DOY), because this date is closest to the observed date of October 10th.
